ARC has successfully completed the Transitions project which culminated in an exhibition held in the Exhibition Galleries at Central Library, Tolhouse Street, Great Yarmouth, from 10th-19th November, 2010. The exhibition included work from the Art Collection Store which was selected by the participants displayed alongside participants own artworks and research panels. Work was created in a variety of media: drawings, paintings, collage, prints, photographs, sculpture, textiles, installations, film and poetry. The exhibition features 15 artists showing 23 works in painting, drawing, prints and sculpture. All artists are based in the Norfolk and Waveney area and were asked to interpret the theme of ‘Renewal’. They were selected by a panel of judges, and all works are for sale. The exhibition runs from Monday 12th April to Saturday 24th. 10am to 5pm.

Cobholm Underpass Mural

Kate at the Cobholm Underpass

The ARC Artists Group was one of the lucky voluntary groups to be approved by people living in Cobholm, Southtown and Halfway House wards for a Neighbourhood Management "Your Neighbourhood, Your Decision" grant . Katarzyna Coleman, Chair of ARC, submitted a proposal to start a project to run workshops and paint a mural on the underpass in Cobholm by researching Cobholm's heritage with local residents.

£10,000 altogether was allocated for projects which will benefit local people, around £500 available per project, with all project ideas being put forward by residents and local organisations. The results of the voting were announced on the 25th March 2010 at the Edward Worledge School, Suffolk Road, an occasion that genuinely felt like a celebration of community spirit.

Transitions: past meets future!
Great Yarmouth arts group ARC, is delighted to announce an Awards for All grant to run Transitions. This project will enable old and young to delve into the Borough Archive and the Norfolk Museums and Archaeology Service's permanent art collection housed at the Central Library in Great Yarmouth. Looking into the past, participants can seek connections with, or comparisons to the present and use new media to share their findings with local people. The project will run workshops to look at cultural life in the Borough and bring the town's creative past into the light. Who knows what might be discovered?
The aim of the project is to raise the profile of the uniquely vital grassroots culture in the Borough, past and present. There is a long and distinguished cultural history in the locality but much has been buried and not celebrated. Transitions intends to bring it to life and to cast an optimistic eye on the future thanks to all the talent being demonstrated amongst the young people, especially in music, dance and drama.
Rupert Mallin, the lead artist on Transitions, says “With this touchstone to the past, participants will be able to pursue their own cultural response – in any medium – to the present and the future. Captured online at East Coast Net, the work will form a record which others can explore and/or add to in the future. It is a very exciting project.”
Transitions will conclude with an exhibition at the Central Library in November. EastCoastNet will be used throughout the project to gather and share materials and as a focus for discussion as the project develops.

Ip-Art Festival

Bridget Heriz is exhibiting a number of her recent constructions in card and wire at the Robert Cross Hall, Corn Exchange, Ipswich as part of the 7th Ip-Art Festival taking place in Ipswich this July. She is exhibiting with Young Blood - a group of artists, printmakers and sculptors that if not young now, were in the 1980s when Andrew Casey first began organising shows of their work in Ipswich. As part of the reunion, Andrew has also organised a small twin exhibition in Woodbridge at the recently opened RE+new gallery in the Thoroughfare. The RE+new exhibition runs from Saturday 4th to Saturday 18th July and the Ip-Art exhibition runs from 27th June to 11th July 2009. The Novus Centre

Both exhibitions featured images of Great Yarmouth, Derek's of the outer harbour construction and Katarzyna's of the industrial scene along the inner harbour.

Jason has created a film which is being shown at the Sainsbury Centre in Norwich on the 18th March at the Late Junction which is free to get in and starts 7pm till 9pm with various acts, artists, also poetry. Jason will be downstairs in the studio showing the 9 minute film which was edited from a 9 hour performance on the 9th September working on nine different things - writing, drawing, guitar, wood carving, painting, stone carving, conversation, piano and reading. Jason showed the film at our last meeting - it's good!

I have been leant some back issues of Studio which have made really interesting reading. An article by Alexander Watt in the March 1960 issue comments on interviews held with six foreign artists working in Paris. One, Christoforou, born in London in 1921 of Greek parents, decided to move to Paris in 1957 because "In England I had the good fortune to have had the support of a few private individuals, but otherwise ..... the official art world, controlled as it is by a few pompous chauvinists, has turned art into an instrument of national prestige in a crude and prejudiced sense." Another, Grimm, complained that "Art is no longer a matter of creating: it has become a mass production."

1.BOROUGH-WIDE COMMUNITY ARTS/ARTISTS WEBSITE

Bridget outlined the idea again and went through a email exchanges she's had with Harry Harold, a website builder, discussing the pros and cons of blogs and sites and costs.

Darren suggested the proposed site should be a 'forum' website rather than a blog – a site that could be both accessible to the visitor and user friendly to all those who post to it – both ARC members and members of GY organisations, together with other artists in the vicinity. Darren further suggested his work could be viewed at the following:-

There was much discussion about the purpose and nature of such a website. For registering a name and hosting it was felt vital that one person takes charge of this. It was unanimously decided that Bridget would take charge of this project.

Choosing a name for the site was the most difficult task. Should it have Great Yarmouth in the title, wholly focussed on its locality but, perhaps, limiting its appeal via the internet?
Here are ideas and possible words we came up with which might (or might not) be helpful in finding an appropriate title:-
HAVEN – HARBOUR – THREE RIVERS – THREE RIVERS DANCE – ARK – TIDE – SURGE – EAST COAST – ARTS- HUB – COMMUNITY – COMMUNE – CULTURE – CULTURE SHOCK – COLLECTIVE – CONFERENCE – YARE – YEAH...

As time was pressing it was decided to a) thoroughly look at Darren's sites and b) each chew over a name for our next meeting. ANY suggests for a name can be sent to me in the mean time rupertmallin@supanet.com
Note: publicity for the site, funding, costs, etc, will be fully discussed at the next meeting.

ARC 2009 PHOTO/FILM/ART EXHIBITION/EVENT
After considering all possible venues (see below) it was agreed that this exhibition could be run over a long weekend as “an exhibition as an event” as there will not only be photos on walls but film showings of artists' work too.

It was agreed that the event would have a wider artistic remit than ARC itself, though centred on the group itself.

With the library out of action, a suitable venue is a priority. We considered Christchurch, the Town Hall, a club (Zen), Ferry House, Gorleston Library, Ocean Rooms, the Toll House, Community Centres, Brett's Warehouse and The Arcade. With the closure of Woolworths and Curry's it was felt that we should contact agents for these properties. Kate suggested a long weekend in summer and this was agreed.

Action: Mark will establish contact with Woolies, and Rupert and Mark will meet to look at venues before the next meeting (in two weeks' time).

Forthcoming exhibition of recent work by Bridget Heriz at The Cut in Halesworth, Suffolk.

The show is based on studies made in sketchbooks over the last two years,

with figures on the move, whether pursuing or fleeing, in hope, in fear or in celebration. The theme is explored in various combinations of crayon, ink, pastel, watercolour, gouache, card, collage: the urge is to find animation not style, expression rather than aesthetic status.

“Walk On” is the title of a blues song written and performed by Brownie McGhee and Sonny Terry on an album I purchased when still at school. “Keep on walking!” the duo call to each other, if only to promote a buoyant spirit on the restless road, for there is no given destination.

Norfolk Contemporary Art Society has arranged a talk by Katarzyna Coleman about her work in relation particularly to Prunella Clough.
There is a strong English tradition of urban landscape from Sickert, Gilman and the Camden school, through Lowry, Kossof, Auerbach, Prunella Clough and many more. Katarzyna’s drawings are based on a passion for the industrial landscape of Great Yarmouth. She will show a number of images of her work and talk about process, influences, and aspects of this tradition which are of particular concern to her, such as rigour of observation, composition and the role of drawing.

Big Draw 'Tide Line' Event at the Time and Tide Museum

ARC artists will be running two family day workshops as part of 'Big Draw' at the Time and Tide Museum, Blackfriars Road, Great Yarmouth on Sunday, October 21 and Saturday, October 27, 12 noon to 4pm.

There will be five workshops to try your hand at - from paper making and collage to printing and object tracings on the theme 'Tide Line.' Your work and activities will be filmed with 'Tide Line' as its title!

This film I made with Quill writing group last year about the Great Yarmouth galleries exhibition is going to be shown at the Big Chill festival. At the 3rd - 5th of August 2007 in the beautiful surroundings of Eastnor Castle Deer Park, deep in the Malvern Hills.
Along with two others of mine they're going to be shown in a bicycle powered cinema on the arts trail there.

A small but enthusiastic group of ARC members and supporters turned up today (June 30th) for our Postive Words Picnic!

In three hours, with rain threatening, we made lots of kites and flying projectiles, made an instant beach sculpture, brought along positive words or wrote 'positive words' in the sand - and Tonia provided an excellent picnic, including trifle!

Huge apologies to those who turned up at the icecream van. My terrible directions! Am on a learning curve and know now how we can make a Peninsula Picnic a large and successful event - but possibly a little later next summer!

ARC's Saturday Art Picnic June 30

You're all invited to our ARC 'Positive Word' Picnic next Saturday June 30th from 10am onwards!

Where to find the ARC: Take the South Denes Road, by car, foot, bike, pram - Great Yarmouth's Town Hall will be on your left and the river Yare on your right. Less than 800 yards down the road, you'll see Nelson's Monument on your left. Somewhere here I'll be waving a flag to let you know our exact 'picnic area.'

It's a big fun day out - for artists, children, film makers and smokers (last day before the ban).

Do, do bring 'positive' words, balloons and any little gardening sticks to make kites - string provided.

Also bring food and drink to share. Most importantly You Be There with friends, family, kids. All will be filmed. And a bird in my ear tells me we've media coverage.

So, let's see out June in Style!

Katarzyna Coleman and Mark Cator have been making studies from an industrial building overlooking the harbour and South Denes in Great Yarmouth. They are exhibiting their work at the New Museum of Contemporary Art, 9 Netherconesford, King Street, Norwich, NR11 1PW, from 23rd April to 31st May, 2007, open 8.30 a.m. - 9.00 p.m., Monday to Saturday.

This is the Ark built by members of ARC (Artists Regenerating Community in Great Yarmouth) for the opening event of Norfolk's Black History Month at St George's Theatre, Gt. Yarmouth, September 2006. Much more is planned in 2007.

Welcome to the Art Regenerating Community in Great Yarmouth blogsite - ARC - local artists seeking to enhance the borough's communities through a diverse range of activities, events and exhibitions.

We are a diverse range of artists ourselves, working in a large range of media - sculpture, print, drawing, film/video, photography, new media, crafts and performance.

In establishing ourselves over the last three years we have staged exhibitions, live events and performance. Last September we built an 'Ark' outside St. George's Theatre in Great Yarmouth - a contribution to celebrate Norfolk's lively Black History Month.

ARC has big plans in 2007/8 in bringing art and people together. As they used to say on early TV, 'watch this space.' And, if you're interested, do get in contact - via 'comment' or direct rupertmallin@supanet.com
